A snapshot of our fantastic trip to the USA in September. We visited New York and attended the Americana Conference and festival in Nashville. Met some great people and played a couple of great gigs at two legendary Nashville venues - The Bluebird Cafe and The Basement.
Our last day in the USA. we drove out to drop off our beautiful Guild loan guitars from James Pennebaker at Fender Nashville's Artist relations office. Thanks to James, John Chandler from Pedaltrain and Marcello Grassi from Eastgate Music/ EGM Distribution for organising these quality instruments for us to use during our time at the Americana Music Conference and festival 2012 held in Nashville. Thanks to Nashville for a great time over the last week.
A quick trip out to see the famous Grand Ole Opry on our way to the airport and then prepare ourselves for the long flight home. Off to the legendary gig at The Basement to do a spot as part of the Sounds Australia delegation @ Americana Conference and Festival. Thanks to Dobe Newton for organising the Australian delegation and ensuring evryone had some exposure throughout the week. The Basement is a fantastic venue with Grimey's Music Store above. Grimey's has a massive new and used vinyl collection and outsold CDs with Vinyl last year. We spent the afternoon watching some great Australian talent and met some more good people. Finished our last night in Nashville with another visit to Joe's Crab Shack and a much quieter night at Robert's Western World where we were treated to some great music from the Chris Casello Trio then the Don Kelley Band. Unbelievable guitar playing from Chris and then Porter! Robert's Western World is an amazing venue and a great place to see some quality music in the heart of the madness (and bandess) of Broadway.
Another great day in Nashville! Off to discover the music stores in and around Nashville and after hours of scouring various stores we unearthed a stratocaster gem! We went to Joe's Crab Shack for a great meal then on to the Mercy Lounge to see the legendary Buddy Miller perform with Leanne Womack. A great show then off to Robert's Western World Honky Tonk on Broadway to watch a fantastic band called 'Jesse Lee & Brazilbilly'. Broadway, Nashville on a Saturday night was packed to the rafters. What an amazing place!
An early start and off to more workshops, the Maton Sounds Australia lunch then some shopping in the Western Apparel stores and suit buying at the famous Sam's Men's Store. Then we headed to Mount Pleasant on Highway 65 for the gig tonight at The Mount Pleasant Bar and Grill. UPDATE! We did the gig tonight at The Mount Pleasant Grill with a number of Australians - Kristy Cox, Lachlan Davidson & Lee Morgan to name a few. We returned after the gig to Nashville in time to see John Hiatt and his band do an amazing 1 hour set at Cannery Row. What a great gig! Check it out.....
More interesting conference workshop sessions today and we met some great people from all over the world at this great festival. We rounded the day off with a great night back at The Station Inn watching the legendary Richard Thompson. Another amazing and intimate gig.
After finding our feet in Nashville we hit the ground running and met some great people at the conference. That night we went to the famous Ryman Auditorium to the Americana Awards ceremony. It was televised and incredible production. Special guests were Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt and Richard Thompson. The all star backing band featured Buddy Miller and Booker T Jones!! Fantastic night followed by an intimate, packed house gig with Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson at The Station Inn. A great night!
Inside the Bluebird Cafe We arrived in Nashville on Tuesday September 11th from New York City. A sobering experience to fly out of New York on this day. Our first gig here in Nashville's Americana Festival was at the legendary Bluebird Cafe as part of the Sounds Australia's 'Taste of Tamworth' concert. This gig opened the Americana Festival and was sold out! The Bluebird Cafe is an amazing venue with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks and Dan Tyminski (to name a few) all playing this intimate venue. The gig was fantastic and all Australian artists were warmly received. Dobe Newton (of The Bushwacker's) pulled the gig together along with the help of Jim Walker (and ex-pat Australian) from Aristomedia. The feedback was fantastic....."Just wanted to say what an amazing job you all did. The Bluebird staff have seen just about everyone play that venue over the years, and when they say it's a great show - it IS!" We've included a video below of our first day and first ever show in Nashville! |
